Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry

At Riley Dental, we strive to provide our patients with the most up to date, innovative dentistry technologies and practices. One of our most popular dental treatment technologies is the soft tissue laser. This tool replaces the need for numerous invasive procedures, and minimized the risk of infection, bleeding and tissue damage. This means healing happens more quickly and patients experience less discomfort.

How it works

A soft tissue laser emits an energized light beam that interacts with tissue on the cellular level. The light destroys unwanted tissue, cauterizes and sterilizes good tissue, and can target an extremely precise are without effecting surrounding tissue.

The beauty of lasers is their adaptability. Soft tissue lasers at certain wavelengths destroy or vaporize tissue, when used to “cure” fillings or whiten teeth the heat from the laser serves a catalyst for the chemical bonding or un-bonding in the case of whitening. Finally, at longer laser wavelengths, enamel become almost completely transparent revealing even the most well hidden cavities.

Soft Tissue Laser Uses

As soft tissue lasers become more widely utilized and technology improves, the uses are seemingly endless. Many dentists regularly employ soft lasers for:

  • Tooth preparation
  • Gum disease therapy
  • Cold sore removal
  • Teeth whitening
  • Curing resin fillings

Some more complex laser procedures are:

  • Crown lengthening
  • Gum reshaping
  • Laser frenectomy
  • Nerve regeneration

Lasers are beneficial for numerous health related reasons like decreased chance of infection, lowered blood loss, and precision, but for some patients the best thing about laser dentistry is that they get the dental care they need without the dreaded drill. Lasers can be a great tool for patients with dental anxiety as they tend to be less painful and avoid the buzzing sound of the drill.
