Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ:

-At what age should children come to the dentist?
Unless there is some concern that a parent would like us to check earlier, we like to see children around the age of 3 years.

-Why should I have a regular checkup?
Regularly scheduled professional examinations and cleanings are necessary to prevent gum disease, diagnose cavities, perform oral cancer screenings, and to address any cosmetic concerns.

-How many times a year should I have a check up?
In the absence of periodontal disease, twice a year is routine. If periodontal disease is present, then intervals between treatments may vary depending on an individual’s condition.

-What is considered good oral hygiene?
The ADA recommends the following:

Brushing you teeth twice daily with an ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste

Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or sooner if bristles are frayed

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner which helps remove bacteria and plaque unable to be reached with a toothbrush.

Eat a balanced diet with healthy snacks

Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exam

-What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is an infection of the gum and bone that hold teeth in place. It may affect the patients overall health. For example: periodontal disease has been linked as a contributing factor to heart disease and stroke.

-What are signs of periodontal disease?
Symptoms include:

gums that bleed easily and are red, swollen and tender

pus is present between the teeth and gums when pressing on the gum

persistent bad breath or a foul taste in the mouth

permanent teeth that are loose, separating or changing position

-What is a crown?
A crown (or cap) is a man made cover that protects the top of the tooth. It may be used to restore and preserve decayed, broken or cracked teeth. Crowns can also be used to correct some cosmetic concerns, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

-What if my temporary crown comes off?
Call the office right away to determine when and if it needs to be reapplied.

-What is a bridge?
A bridge is a way to replace one or more missing teeth. Replacing missing teeth makes it easier to chew, can improve your appearance, and can also help keep your teeth, gums and jaws healthy.
